| MP calls for action on landfill criminals. |
| 28/03/2003 |
An MP has highlighted the growing problem of illegal waste disposal operators, caused by the gradually increasing landfill tax.
Bogus companies are offering a cheaper way for businesses to dispose of rubbish, then dumping the material in unsuitable and environmentally damaging ways.
Peter Luff, MP for Mid-Worcestershire, raised the issue during a Parliamentary debate on the Waste and Emissions Trading Bill, and called for a more effect system to deter the activities.
The incremental landfill tax was introduced to encourage an increase in waste recycling and to stem the seemingly endless flow of waste that ends up in landfill sites. The rate currently stands at £14 per tonne, but will rise to £15 by the end of 2003, with £3 annual hikes planned for the next seven years. The eventual cost of landfill tax will be £35 per tonne by 2010.
