| 'Incurably sick' office destroyed |
| 15/12/2001 |
A building dubbed the 'sickest' in Britain was destroyed last weekend in a controlled implosion demolition. Saint John's House the Inland Revenues base in Bootle, Merseyside and is believed to be the first building demolished because of Sick Building Syndrome (SBS).
According to Mowlem who carried out the implosion, staff working at the building were forced to take a particularly high number of sick days each year due to SBS induced health problems. These included such as lethargy, streaming eyes, coughs and headaches. A company spokeswoman confirmed that while the cause of the SBS was never firmly established it was thought to be linked to the ventilation systems.
Earlier this year Tom Taylor of the Health & Safety Executive said the building had to be destroyed since no satisfactory solution could be found to deal with the problem. He added that the building had cost £20m to build and cost a similar amount to demolish.
Inland Revenue employees have been moved to St John's House a £14m office block developed, just 11m from the site of it's namesake. |
